This weekend was a wonderful gathering of photographers, estates, archives, experts and enthusiasts at the International Center of Photography to discuss conservation, value, new technologies, licensing and other topics related to preserving the work and legacies of exceptional photographers. To name just a few...Yousuf Karsh, Eugene Richards, Art Shay, Ruth Orkin, Morris Engel, Rodney Smith, Dan Weiner, Hugh Bell, Lawrence Schiller, Jerry Dantzic, Marilyn Nance, Sam Shaw and many others.
"Renoir: Father and Son / Painting and Cinema" Exhibition Tour

The exhibition about painter Pierre-August Renoir and his filmmaker son Jean Renoir opens today at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. It includes never before seen photographs by Sam Shaw from Shaw's archive. The exhibition was previously on view at the The Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia and will be in Paris through January 27, 2019.

Sotheby's Paris is hosting an exhibition before the November 9 Photographies auction. On the right: large Sam Shaw behind-the-scenes photo of photographer Richard Avedon and the model Dovima creating one of Avedon's most famous photos. On the left: the final result - Richard Avedon's iconic "Dovima with Elephants, Evening Dress by Dior, Cirque d'Hiver, Paris, 1955". Estimated at 600,000-900,000 EUR.
"Posing Modernity: The Black Model from Manet and Matisse to Today" Exhibition

A new exhibition focusing on the centrality of the black female figure in modern art is now on view at Columbia University's Wallach Art Gallery, from October 24, 2018 to February 10, 2019, and will then be expanded at Paris' Musée d'Orsay from March 26 to July 14, 2019. One of Sam Shaw's photographs of artist Romare Bearden with a model from the 1940s appears in the exhibition catalog.
New Romare Bearden Book

A new book is out by Mary Schmidt Campbell (president of Spelman College and dean emerita of NYU's Tisch School of the Arts) about the great American artist Romare Bearden, a good friend and collaborator of Sam Shaw. Only fitting that a Shaw portrait of Bearden in front of Harlem's Apollo theater grace the cover of this new book. Other Shaw photographs illustrate the interior.

A big crowd gave big love to Sam Shaw during the opening night of "Remembering Sam Shaw: 60 Years of Photography" at Brandts Museum in Denmark. Brandts Museum's Director, Mads Damsbo, and journalist and former Head of the Filmacademy of Denmark, Poul Nesgaard, welcomed visitors with opening remarks, while Curator Anna Krogh and Sam Shaw's daughters, Meta Shaw Stevens and Edie Shaw Marcus, answered questions about the photographs and Sam's life. Hundreds of photographs on view now through January 21, 2018!
